Dorothy Ellen is an Optimist Artist
My work is rooted in the belief that art can be joyful, hopeful, and accessible. I am drawn to color, movement, and design as tools for creating uplifting experiences—visual moments that spark curiosity, lightness, and emotional connection.
My process is intuitive and playful, guided by trust and experimentation. Each painting unfolds without the possibility of pressing CTRL+Z or an "undo" button, requiring me to embrace imperfection and allow the work to evolve naturally. Drips, layered marks, and unexpected outcomes are essential elements of the final piece, reflecting a willingness to release control and find beauty in what emerges. A distinctive aspect of my work is the use of resin to create a spot-gloss finish, a technique I think of as “painting with light.” The resin interacts with light and space, causing the surface to shift throughout the day and bringing an added sense of depth, energy, and movement to the work. This material exploration is central to my practice and keeps the creative process feeling curious and open. Now based in St. Louis, Missouri, my goal is to create art that brings joy and hope into everyday spaces. Through bold color, thoughtful design, and subtle visual messages, I aim to offer work that feels optimistic, engaging, and emotionally uplifting—art that invites viewers to pause, feel, and carry a sense of lightness with them. -Dorothy Ellen |
